IB Mathematics AA (HL & SL) Exam Prep

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is the IB Diploma's mathematics course emphasising algebraic methods, functions, calculus, and proof, offered at Higher Level (240 teaching hours) and Standard Level (150 hours). This page covers the AA paper structure, grade boundaries, IA expectations, and how OmniTutor supports each piece.

How it works

An AI tutor that actually tutors.

1

Ask anything

Stuck at 11pm before a test? Ask in chat or by voice. Answers are worked to your exam's style — not generic textbook copy.

2

Watch it explained

Every topic can become a short video lesson, generated for your chapter — with real examples and diagrams.

3

Follow a plan that adapts

A daily plan built from your syllabus's weightage. Miss a day? It rebalances instead of guilt-tripping.

HL students sit three papers (two 2-hour papers plus a 1-hour investigation paper) and submit an individual exploration worth 20%; SL students sit two 1.5-hour papers plus the exploration.

AA rewards written fluency with method marks — a correct answer with no working earns little. Practising with mark-scheme feedback is the core skill-builder OmniTutor provides.

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI?

Analysis and Approaches (AA) is the classic pure-maths route: heavy on functions, trigonometry, calculus, and formal proof, with limited calculator use on Paper 1. Applications and Interpretation (AI) leans on statistics, modelling, and technology throughout.

Choose AA for mathematics, physics, engineering, or economics at university; AI suits social sciences, design, and data-oriented programmes. Top universities' maths and engineering faculties explicitly prefer or require AA HL.

What are the IB Maths AA HL papers?

Paper 1 (2 hours, no calculator, 30%) tests pure technique on short and long questions; Paper 2 (2 hours, calculator, 30%) tests applied and technology-fluent problem solving; Paper 3 (1 hour, 20%) is a single extended investigation requiring sustained independent reasoning — the score differentiator at the top grades.

The remaining 20% is the internal assessment — a 12-20 page mathematical exploration you write on a topic of your choice.

How is the Maths IA structured and graded?

The exploration is graded against five criteria — presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection, and use of mathematics — for 20 marks total. Examiners reward coherence and genuine mathematical ownership, not topic difficulty; a simple topic analysed deeply beats an ambitious one done superficially.

Strong explorations typically start from a personal question, build a model or proof, then examine limitations. OmniTutor helps you stress-test structure, tighten notation, and check the mathematics itself before submission.

What are AA HL grade boundaries like?

Boundaries move per session, but historically a 7 needs roughly 80%+ across papers, a 6 around 68-72%. Because Paper 1 is no-calculator, arithmetic and algebraic fluency are worth direct marks — students who practise mental algebra consistently outperform.

Past-paper cycles with mark-scheme self-grading remain the gold standard; OmniTutor automates the checking layer so you grade against real mark-scheme language, not optimism.

How do you revise for IB Maths AA HL?

Go topic-by-topic through the syllabus booklet first (functions, complex numbers, calculus, vectors, probability, and the HL-only sets and proof), then shift to full timed papers 6-8 weeks before mocks. Log every dropped mark into a topic ledger and re-test misses after a week.

For Paper 3, practise unfamiliar-problem stamina: attempt investigations under time without notes. OmniTutor's hint-ladder mode nudges without solving — the exact muscle Paper 3 tests.

AA HL past papers with the mark-scheme reasoning attached — I finally saw where my method marks were leaking. Paper 3 stopped being terrifying once I practised investigations the same way.

My IA draft got specific feedback on the research question and structure — exactly the two things my supervisor kept flagging. The maths check caught an error in my model I had missed for weeks.

No-calculator Paper 1 drills rebuilt my algebra speed. I stopped losing silly marks to arithmetic and my paper 1 score jumped a full band.

Questions

It is widely regarded among the most demanding HLs alongside Physics HL — fast pacing, deep calculus, and a no-calculator paper. Students with strong algebra from IGCSE Additional Maths or MYP extend cope well; students starting shakier benefit most from early, structured practice rather than pre-exam sprints.

For mathematics, engineering, physics, and most economics degrees, AA HL is preferred — many programmes state it explicitly, some accepting AI HL with a higher score. For business, psychology, or design, either route is accepted. Always check the specific course page before choosing.

12-20 pages, double-spaced, focused on one well-developed mathematical idea. Examiners penalise padding and reward reflection — discussing limitations and next steps earns more marks than extra theorems. Choose a topic you genuinely care about; personal engagement is a graded criterion.

A graphing calculator from the IB-approved list — the TI-84 series and Casio fx-CG50 are the most common. Paper 1 forbids it entirely, so calculator fluency matters on Papers 2 and 3 only: solving numerically, sketching to verify, and evaluating definite integrals.

Yes — hint-ladder practice on unfamiliar problems mirrors exactly what Paper 3 assesses: making progress on mathematics you have not seen before. You also get step-checked working for every past-paper question and instant explanations when a method breaks down.
